Four Paths for Caledonia: A High-Stakes Decision
On September 29th, the Village Board faces a critical choice that will define the future of our region. Based on how similar projects have played out, their decision will likely fall into one of four scenarios. It is our job to ensure they choose the only responsible path.
Scenario 1: The Rubber Stamp
"A Betrayal of Public Trust"
The board ignores overwhelming public opposition, the evidence from failed projects like Foxconn, and the concerns of the entire region. They vote to approve the rezoning with minimal conditions, siding with the anonymous developer and corporate interests.
The Outcome: Industrial sprawl is locked in. Higher utility bills, lower property values, and the destruction of our rural landscape become our future. It sends a clear message that our community is for sale.
Scenario 2: The Sweetheart Deal
"Money for Promises"
The board approves the rezoning but promotes a "Community Benefits Agreement." The developer agrees to pay for a new park or make a donation in exchange for the green light. The board frames this as a "win-win."
The Outcome: This is a form of bribery. The "benefits" are a pittance compared to the developer's profits and the long-term costs we will all bear. It allows the board to claim they "got a good deal" while trading our future for a short-term political victory.
Scenario 3: The Delay Tactic
"Death by Committee"
Facing immense public pressure, the board delays the vote. They announce the formation of a special committee to "conduct more research" on the impacts. They appear to be listening and acting responsibly.
The Outcome: This is a classic political strategy to diffuse public anger. The committee process drags on for months, allowing the developer to lobby behind the scenes. The project is quietly approved later when public attention has faded. It is a slow "yes" disguised as diligence.
Scenario 4: Leadership for the People
"Just Say No"
The Village Board listens to its constituents from Caledonia, Oak Creek, and across the region. They acknowledge the extreme risks, the lack of transparency, the violation of the 2035 Community Plan, and the disastrous precedent of Foxconn. They vote NO on the rezoning.
The Outcome: Our shared resources, property values, and quality of life are protected. The board upholds its duty to the public and sends a powerful message that Southeast Wisconsin's future is not for sale to the highest bidder.
We Must Demand Scenario 4
It is our responsibility to show up and make it clear to the board that the only acceptable path forward is to vote NO. Let's pack the hearing on September 29th and hold them accountable.
